CHISHIMBA KAMBWILI: THE TRAGIC CASE OF A POOR ACTOR WITH SELECTIVE AMNESIA PLAYING TO AN EMPTY GALLERY By Sunday Chilufya Chanda As our nation matures and draws closer towards celebrating 54 years of self-determination, the majority of ordinary Zambians are becoming increasingly perceptive in discerning political leadership. Very few of our citizens would therefore fall prey to the poverty of critical thinking which our wayward brother Chishimba Kambwili has unfortunately been practicing. The mire has become his element and he seeks to draw everybody including the Church and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) into his marshy arena. It is shocking that a former senior government official, like Kambwili has suddenly and conveniently developed an odd type of selective of amnesia that seems to have made him forget that the ACC operates independently and that it follows laid down procedures. He has opted to play to the gallery.  However to the majority of Zambians, his ta...

FOR THE GOOD OF OUR NATION LETS US EMBRACE PATRIOTISM AND RESPONSIBILITY; RATHER THAN REVERSE PATRIOTISM AND ILL-WILL By Sunday Chilufya Chanda Over the last few hours social media activity has been in a frenzy reminiscent of Brownian motion. Feverish discussions in cyber space and elsewhere have been agitated by Mr Chibamba Kanyama’s alarming tweet to the effect that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has “withdrawn” its representative in Zambia, and “does not plan to have a replacement anytime soon”.  He went on to paint a gloomy picture putting Zambia in the same category with countries that were in dire economic straits. Given his academic background and professional standing, Mr Kanyama’s tweet was taken by many in the cyber public and elsewhere, as the infallible gospel truth. As it turns out, our brother is flesh and blood and is consequently prone to error from time to time; by design or by default. Mr Kanyama is a man of considerable letters- at...

“THE PROBLEM MR HICHILEMA IS HAVING NOW IS THE FACT THAT HE WANTS TO CHEAT, TO MISLEAD, TO SHOW THAT HE IS WHAT HE IS NOT.” -MWANAWASA MEMOIRS. The late Mwanawasa in his memoirs gave a frank and  sincere  appraisal of Hakainde Hichilema: "His understanding of politics is that it doesn't matter; you can cheat, provided you get your goals." By Sunday Chilufya  Chanda Listening to Mr. Hakainde Hichilema’s attempts to eulogise the memory of late President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa on Prime TV’S Oxygen of Democracy was shocking and ridiculously pathetic. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Hichilema went all the way to whine and groan about what he considers to be our failures as the Patriotic Front. At this point we can tell his vibe line by line even before he opens his mouth because he has nothing new to say except that bitter script he has mastered over the years. Mr. Hichilema despised and abused President Mwanawasa while he...

KOFI ANNAN:   TRIBUTE TO A BRIDGE BUILDER AND PEACEMAKER By Sunday Chilufya Chanda Kofi Annan: the eminent African- globally celebrated envoy and charismatic icon of peace, passed away serenely in the early hours of today. The former United Nations Secretary General and Nobel laureate wore a coat of many colours and he was many things to many people on many occasions. Kofi Annan was also a great thinker, writer and orator.  Many of his deep thought provoking insights were captured in his speeches and other literary works such as his memoirs “ Interventions: A life in War and Peace”. As we mourn his death we also celebrate his life by remembering and reflecting on a few of his most profound thoughts. On Education and Literacy: Kofi Annan-the seventh Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan had a burning passion for education: “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every so...

A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF THE LATE PRESIDENT LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA THE THIRD PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA By Sunday Chilufya Chanda Today marks the tenth anniversary of the death President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa the third President of the Republic of Zambia.  We thank God for his memory.  He may be gone, but his legacy lives on. We remember with great fondness when  while the Patriotic Front was in opposition, the late Dr  Mwanawasa together with our party’s founding father the Late Michael Chilufya Sata, demonstrated mature statesmanship in an fraternal    demonstration  of public  reconciliation in May 2008. The late Michael Chilufya Sata was eventually elected President of the Republic of Zambia in September 2011 and he died in office in 2014 and he was succeeded by the incumbent President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. President Lungu’s presidency has greatly been inspired by the Mwanawasa/Sata legacy of “talking to each...

CELEBRATING KALUSHA BWALYA (OGDS) ON HIS BIRTHDAY;  NO MATTER THE PRESENT CHALLENGES, NO MATTER WHAT LIES BEFORE HIM; HE IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A NATIONAL, AFRICAN AND GLOBAL HERO. By Sunday Chilufya Chanda The crowded stadium was bursting at its seams and the multitude of spectators chorused in excited anticipation “Lusha...Lusha…Lusha!” Down on the soccer pitch, a figure with the number “11” written on the back of his copper coloured jersey calmly stepped up to take a free kick on the fringe of the penalty area.  There was a lot at stake! Kalusha Bwalya on the pitch at the Seoul 1988 during the match against Italy The young man shouldered the hopes of an entire nation; yet he kept his composure. Seconds later, the crowd’s expectation was rewarded. The player’s left foot stroked the ball with just the right power and spin and it curved over the human wall in front of it as if it were a guided missile, cruising into the top right corner of the goal post ...

Sunday Chilufya Chanda LAURA’S OBSESSION AND HER CLOUDED TRIBAL LENSES;  READING TRIBALISM IN EVERYTHING By Sunday Chilufya Chanda According to Laura Miti, we shouldn't refer to the domiciles of subjects of a discussion as that amounts to tribalism. Tragically that is Laura’s mis-configured blunt tool of analysis. If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything else looks like a nail. We hear of the media reporting about Lusaka-based lawyers, Kitwe based doctors; Solwezi based businessmen and so on and so forth. She is seeing sordid things that don’t exist. She is being overly creative and this kind of “resourcefulness” is not good for anybody let alone a beautiful woman with a fine intellect like hers. We are concerned- very concerned; she has us scratching our heads. We doubt it could it be something pathological. Perhaps it could it be a way of flitting in and out of the limelight in a quest to remain relevant to her benefactors. It is commo...
PART 2 EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU:   Zambia’s No.1 Envoy   and Development Agent for Trade, Inter-Governmental Cooperation, Infrastructure Development, resource Mobilisation, and People to People Exchanges. By Sunday Chilufya Chanda In this series, the author discusses the phenomenal development achievements of the last seven years of the Patriotic Front Government administration under the late President Michael Sata and his successor President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, and how this unprecedented wonder of development which the current head of State is spearheading at home and abroad, can easily be taken for granted  just like people general take the wonder of the  stars in the night sky for granted, because they have become accustomed to the spectacle.  In order to significantly improve the living standards of all Zambians, the PF Government, with President Lungu at the wheel, has embarked on several efforts at domestic / national, regional and international ...
