A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF THE LATE PRESIDENT LEVY PATRICK MWANAWASA THE THIRD PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA
By Sunday Chilufya Chanda
Today marks the tenth anniversary of the death President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa the third President of the Republic of Zambia.
We thank God for his memory.
He may be gone, but his legacy lives on.
We remember with great fondness when while the Patriotic Front was in opposition, the late Dr Mwanawasa together with our party’s founding father the Late Michael Chilufya Sata, demonstrated mature statesmanship in an fraternal demonstration of public reconciliation in May 2008.
The late Michael Chilufya Sata was eventually elected President of the Republic of Zambia in September 2011 and he died in office in 2014 and he was succeeded by the incumbent President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
President Lungu’s presidency has greatly been inspired by the Mwanawasa/Sata legacy of “talking to each” other.
The PF Government of His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has demonstrated tremendous commitment to dialogue with the opposition.
Sadly; the current opposition is not in the mould of the opposition that was in place when Dr. Mwanawasa was President.
While President Lungu reaches out to talk to the opposition, some respond by “talking at” him rather than reaching out to talk to him. Dialogue is about constructive criticism and not destructive cynicism.
President Mwanawasa was a paragon of servant leadership; a perfect demonstration of the adage: “good servants make the best leaders”. He just didn’t “pop up” but he rose through the ranks to the top through service, having served as vice-president from 1992 to 1994, whilst an elected Member of Parliament of Chifubu Constituency.
As we commemorate the tenth memorial of his death, let us celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Mwanawasa through seeking the path of peace by talking to each other and not talking at each other.
Let us embrace constructive criticism and not destructive cynicism.
May we all live in peace with each other as his soul rests in peace.
Ends…//…
