REFLECTIONS ON MY BIRTHDAY
By Sunday Chilufya Chanda
As I celebrate my birthday today I wish to thank Jehovah for adding another day, and another year to my life.I do not take anything for granted; especially God’s Grace and Mercy.
I thank God for the many blessings that can so easily be taken for granted - notably my wife, my children as well as family and friends.
The simplest things in life give me the greatest pleasure: having a chat with ordinary people on the street, enjoying a simple meal of Zambian delicacies with kith and kin, burning the resulting calories by exercising with others at the gym and reading a good book.
Being surrounded by great friends and family has provided me with a solid foundation that keeps me balanced and grounded where I need to be.
I particularly thank God for His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu from whose fountain of wisdom I have constantly drank to quench my thirst for service to fellow man.
The Patriotic Front family serving under our President at the Secretariat led by Hon Davies Mwila and the Central Committee has also been a boon to my life and a great pleasure to serve and work with.
At the end of the day, I am a sum total of what I have learned from all who have taught me and nurtured me, whether they are known or unknown -both great and small.
As strange as it may sound to some, I am also grateful for the opportunity to engage the opposition from a position of rivalry; not enmity.
Enmity is a kind of hostility that comes from a state of deep-seated ill-will. It is negative energy and it does not benefit our nation, least of all those that bear it.
Rivalry on the other hand is the act of competing for a prize. It has the potential to bring out the best in ourselves and among ourselves.
Rivalry in the political arena can be fierce, but we should not allow it to turn into unsavoury enmity.
We are a Christian nation. Our Lord Jesus told us as his disciples that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Whether on the job, at the market, in a bus, among friends and family members, as God’s people we are placed wherever we are to bring seasoning to unsavoury situations.
It has been said that there are two great days in our lives - the day we are born and the day we discover why. My purpose is in Christ and all he accomplished for me on the cross.
Every birthday is a gift. But more importantly, every day is a gift. I do not just count my years; my prayer is to make my years count for the service of man and to the glory of God.
God willing, I plan to write a book to be launched next year on my 43rd Birthday.
In the meantime as I look ahead, I run with the following scripture:
“I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me”. (Philippians 3:12).
